Beowulf는 `게르만 민족에 의해 만들어진, 현존하는 가장 위대한 서사시 the greatest of the surviving epics composed by German peoples`라 후대에 일컬어질 만큼, 고대시 중에서 가장 탁월한 것이다 하지만 그 무대와 민물은 영국적인 것이라기보다는 그들의 선조인 게르만족의 전설에 기반을 두고 있따 이 시는 당시의 사회 구조와 가치관에 대해 많은 것을 알려주고 있는 역싸의 보고(寶庫)이기도 하다.
⇒ The king and the warriors: Beowulf가 보여주는 가장 중요한 관계이다. 왕과 전사들은 상호 신뢰와 존중으로 연결되어 있으며, 전사들은 왕을 보호하기 위해 전쟁에서 죽는 것을 명예로 여기고 있다(Heroic Ideal). 왕은 그들의 충혼에 대해 보물로써 보상하는데(이로 인해 왕은 `dispenser of treasure,` 또는 `ring-giver` 등의 kenning으로 불리기도 한다). 그리고 그 보물은 단지 부(wealth)의 의미가 아닌 `명예`의 징표로 널리 후세에 전해지도록 되어 있따
